It’s streaming now. What is the lore behind the Honmoon in KPop Demon Hunters? In the film, Rumi, Zoey, and Mira work to protect the world from demons and hope to accomplish that by sealing their universe off from the supernatural beings. “When they do that, the Honmoon — which is sort of the power that watches over us and is symbolized as a big circular moon — will turn gold,” executive music producer Ian Eisendrath explains. “When that happens, their job is done.” Rumi believes that when the Honmoon turns gold, her demonic patterns will also vanish and so she spends her life working toward that cure. Meanwhile, the Saja Boys, the demonic boyband led by Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop), aim to steal all of HUNTR/X’s fans — thus stripping away the girl group’s power and weakening the Honmoon barrier so other demons, including Gwi-Ma (Byung Hun Lee), can enter the world and devour human souls. How does KPop Demon Hunters end? The film draws to an epic conclusion with the energetic track “What It Sounds Like,” which is both a “hit inspirational pop song, but also delivers on Rumi’s journey, [and her] realizing that this whole plan to seal the Honmoon and get rid of all the demons is evil,” Eisendrath notes. After finally figuring out what her mission actually is, Rumi decides to destroy the Honmoon along with the notion of demons versus humans. In doing so, she returns Jinu’s soul, which he then gifts to her. Through song, and some fierce moves, HUNTR/X eventually defeats the Saja Boys and saves their fans from the massive demonic threat. And after learning self-acceptance, Rumi no longer hides her patterns. We end with Rumi, Zoey, and Mira forgoing a three-month break to hang with their fans. Are there any Easter eggs in KPop Demon Hunters? The film features several nods to the K-pop group TWICE, whose members Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung sing on the track “Takedown” (TWICE Version). When Bobby (Ken Jeong) views the music charts on his phone, the TWICE song “Strategy” appears on that list. TWICE can also be seen on a poster in the backstage hallway of the Idol Awards. When Rumi first meets Jinu, the song “Love Maybe,” performed by MeloMance and featured in the series Business Proposal (also starring Hyo-seop), is used. “The song was in the [film’s] cut long before we even cast Ahn Hyo-seop,” co-director Maggie Kang revealed in a Reddit AMA interview.
